Summer Skills

Math Fact Practice Sheets

This past school year your child worked very hard and made lots of progress in his/her reading and math skills. The staff of Community Christian School want to thank you for all the work you have done at home to make this possible.

Many times, children will make a lot of progress during the school year, but when they don’t practice and use their reading and math skills over the summer, they regress. Summer learning loss is a major challenge when starting off a new school year. However, students who read and review math skills over the summer return to school ready to continue their learning with little or no learning loss. In order to retain these important skills, the CCS Staff has established summer reading and math goals for students entering Grades 1- 8.

Summer Reading Goals

The CCS Staff encourages students to continue reading on a daily basis during the summer months. This will allow students to successfully complete the summer reading goals listed below.

Entering 1st Grade: The goal is to read 10 books. These should be books that they can read out loud to someone. They may not be books that someone reads to them.

Entering 2nd Grade: The goal is to read 12 books. These are books that they read alone or out loud to someone. They may not be books that someone reads to them.

Entering 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th Grade: Students will be given an Accelerated Reader Goal. Students can log into AR to find their assigned goal. They should choose books that they read alone or out loud to someone. They may not be books that someone reads to them.

Entering 7th & 8th Grade: The goal is to read 4 books. Students may choose any type of book but it must be at the middle school level or above.

We have posted a Summer Reading Log (for students to list the books they have read) and a list of suggested book and/or authors for each grade level on the CCS home page under “SUMMER SKILLS” Copies are also available in the CCS office.

Students who successfully complete THE SUMMER READING REQUIREMENT will be awarded with a special treat and be able to participate in a special activity in September during the first week of school!

Summer Math Fact Practice

The CCS Staff also encourages weekly review and practice of basic math facts over the summer months. Weekly practice during the summer will reduce the amount of time needed to relearn and review next fall. Students that are able to recall math facts quickly will be ready to move forward with other math concepts. We have listed expectations for each grade and have provided a calendar for students to record math facts practice times.

Entering 2nd Grade: 20 minutes per week (addition, subtraction)
Entering 3rd Grade: 20 minutes per week (addition, subtraction)
Entering 4th Grade: 30 minutes per week (addition, subtraction, multiplication) Entering 5th & 6th Grade: 40 minutes per week

(addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) Entering 7th & 8th Grade: 20 minutes per week (multiplication, division)

We have posted practice sheets for each grade level on the CCS website under the “SUMMER SKILLS” tab. You may also use flashcards and computer, tablet, or phone apps. Copies of the practice sheets are also available in the CCS office.

Happy Summer!
